August for Kids at Woodbury Community Library

ALL programs begin at 11 am and last one hour

August 9th

Story songs with Stephen Murphy. Bring your best hat and your singing voice for a delightful hour with Stephen Murphy and friends, who will stir up some sweet melodies and fun rhymes with traditional and newer songs. Healthy snacks for the kids and grownups too! Refreshments served.

August 16th

 Make your own guitar!

Each child gets a kit to assemble and decorate a guitar complete with strings!A great followup to the previous week's special event with story songs.  A sound wave is produced by a vibrating object. As a guitar string vibrates, it sets surrounding air molecules into vibrational motion. The frequency at which these air molecules vibrate is equal to the frequency of vibration of the guitar string.

Make your own Thaumatrope

A thaumatrope is a traditional optical illusion of bird in a cage and was very popular in the 19th century. A disk with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string or to a round stick. When the strings are twirled or you rub the stick so the disk revolves quickly the two pictures appear to blend into one due to the persistence of vision. Kids will make their own thaumatrope and we'll talk about optical illusions.

What’s gravity and here’s a bird to prove it

Gravity is a force of attraction between two objects. All objects with mass have gravity. Gravity acts like a magnet - pulling objects together. What causes gravity is not really known.

Gravity holds everything close to this planet. Trees, water, animals, buildings, and the air we breathe are all held here by gravity. All of the planets, the stars and the moons of the universe have gravity. Even our own bodies have gravity. The Earth's gravity is far stronger than our own so we don't notice the gravity our bodies possess. We don't actually "feel" gravity. We only feel the effects of trying to overcome it by jumping or when we fall. Join us for a fun hour of making and decorating your own gravity bird!
